Trump Warns Mamdani to ‘Behave’ if Elected NYC Mayor
President Trump escalated his criticism of New York State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani on Monday, warning the Democratic mayoral nominee that he “better behave” if he wins the general election in November.
Speaking at a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said Mamdani would need financial support from the White House, suggesting that would give the federal government leverage. “He needs the money through the White House. He needs a lot. He will behave,” Trump told reporters. “He better behave. Otherwise, he will have big problems.”
Trump described Mamdani’s current popularity as a “honeymoon” phase following his surprise victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary. He also labeled Mamdani a “communist,” dismissing the assemblyman’s affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America.
“Who knows, we don’t know who the mayor is going to be yet,” Trump said. “But this is a communist. He’s not a socialist he is a communist. And he’s made some very bad statements about Jewish people, and others too.”
Mamdani has faced sharp criticism from Republican lawmakers for his pro-Palestinian positions and a controversial pledge to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu if he visits New York. “As mayor of New York City, I would arrest Benjamin Netanyahu,” Mamdani said in an interview last month, citing international law.
His remarks followed the International Criminal Court’s decision in May to issue an arrest warrant for Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza though Israel, like the U.S., is not a member of the ICC.
