In a recent meeting with GOP senators, President-elect Trump expressed his ambition to sign 100 executive orders, emphasizing his focus on immigration policies. According to Senator Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Trump is particularly interested in addressing border issues, although these are not the exclusive focus of his planned executive actions.
During the gathering, Trump’s immigration advisor, Stephen Miller, discussed strategies for immediate action on border security once Trump takes office, including the possibility of reinstating Title 42. This policy, controversial for its role in the rapid expulsion of asylum-seekers during the COVID-19 pandemic, was previously maintained by President Biden until its expiration in May 2023.
The extensive two-hour discussion in the Capitol also saw Trump and the Republican senators debating the optimal approach to prioritizing the president-elect’s key issues, such as border security and tax relief. While leaders like Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) advocated for a comprehensive package that includes border security, energy, and defense, Trump showed a preference for addressing these issues in a single legislative bill.
Trump’s strategy aligns closely with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), with both agreeing that a unified bill should cover border security, energy, defense, and the extension of the Trump tax cuts from 2017.
