Trump Wants Apology From Who?

Early one Wednesday morning, President Trump expressed his discontent on Truth Social about comments made by the bishop at a National Cathedral prayer service during the inauguration. The bishop, Mariann Edgar Budde, had used her sermon to appeal to President Trump for compassion towards transgender children and immigrant families.

Trump described Bishop Budde’s remarks as “nasty” and criticized her for being politically motivated. He wrote, “The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart.”

In his post, Trump also lamented that the bishop failed to address the issue of illegal immigrants who, according to him, have caused harm in the U.S. He claimed, “She failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our country and killed people. Many were deposited from jails and mental institutions. It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA.” He further criticized the overall tone of the service as boring and uninspiring, demanding an apology from both Bishop Budde and her church.

During her sermon, Bishop Budde had implored the President to show mercy to marginalized groups, stating, “I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared. There are gay, lesbian, transgender children, Democratic, Republican, independent families — some who fear for their lives.” She defended immigrants who, despite lacking proper documentation, contribute to society by paying taxes and being active members of religious communities. Budde highlighted the fear among these families of being separated due to immigration enforcement.

Upon returning to the White House after the service, President Trump commented to reporters that the service had not been particularly impressive, remarking, “They can do much better.”

This incident has sparked further debate, with figures like Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) suggesting extreme measures in response to the bishop’s sermon. Amidst this controversy, Trump continued to advance his strict immigration policies through several executive orders aimed at restricting immigration and reinforcing measures like the “Remain in Mexico” policy for asylum-seekers.
