President Trump unleashed a furious response on Saturday following a federal judge’s ruling that blocked his administration from using the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members a decision that sent shockwaves across America and ignited fresh controversy over executive authority and immigration enforcement.
“Can it be so that Judges aren’t allowing the USA to Deport Criminals, including Murderers, out of our Country and back to where they came from?” Trump wrote in an early morning post on Truth Social. “If this is so, our Country, as we know it, is finished! Americans will have to get used to a very different, crime filled, LIFE. This is not what our Founders had in mind!!!”
The president’s outburst came just two days after U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez Jr., a Trump appointee, ruled that the Alien Enemies Act does not authorize the administration to rapidly deport individuals suspected of being part of the Tren de Aragua gang to El Salvador. The judge’s decision extended a prior injunction and raised significant questions about the administration’s interpretation of long-dormant wartime powers.
In his 36-page opinion, Rodriguez wrote that the Alien Enemies Act which dates back to the 18th century was designed for times of war and could only be invoked when there is evidence of an “organized, armed force” entering the country under the direction of a foreign government. He concluded that the administration’s use of the law lacked the legal basis required for such drastic action.
“The Proclamation makes no reference to and in no manner suggests that a threat exists of an organized, armed group of individuals entering the United States at the direction of Venezuela to conquer the country or assume control over a portion of the nation,” Rodriguez wrote. “Thus, the Proclamation’s language cannot be read as describing conduct that falls within the meaning of ‘invasion’ for purposes of the AEA.”
The ruling marked one of the most dramatic legal pushbacks against the Trump administration in recent weeks, sparking heated debate and leaving many Americans concerned about the implications for national security, immigration enforcement, and constitutional checks on executive power. The shockwave extended beyond legal circles, with voters, lawmakers, and community leaders reacting strongly to the court’s decision and the president’s combative rhetoric.
