President-elect Trump recently suggested that former Representative Liz Cheney might face significant difficulties following a recommendation by House Republicans for a criminal investigation into her actions. This recommendation comes from her involvement in the committee that investigated the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
In a post on Truth Social early Wednesday morning, Trump indicated that Cheney “could be in a lot of trouble” based on the findings of the subcommittee. He quoted the report, saying it pointed out that “numerous federal laws were likely broken by Liz Cheney, and these violations should be investigated by the FBI.”
Trump also commended Representative Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), who leads the Oversight Subcommittee of the Committee on House Administration. His remarks followed closely on the heels of the subcommittee’s release of a 128-page interim report. This report critiques what it describes as the “failures and politicization” of the now-dissolved House January 6 committee, claiming it wrongfully blamed Trump for the Capitol riot and was formed illegitimately.
The report harshly criticized the select committee organized under Speaker Nancy Pelosi, labeling it as a “political weapon” aimed to falsely associate Trump with the Capitol violence and to damage the reputation of his first presidency.
Furthermore, the Republicans’ report calls for the completion of an FBI investigation into Cheney, specifically accusing her of witness tampering through her interactions with Cassidy Hutchinson, a former White House aide.
Cheney, who has been a prominent critic of Trump since his loss in the 2020 election, strongly condemned the report. She denounced it for creating “lies” and “defamatory allegations,” standing firmly against the claims made by her political adversaries.
