Former Representative Adam Kinzinger criticized President Trump on Tuesday, calling the first 100 days of his second term in office a “failure” and warning that the administration’s actions have already done significant harm to the country. In a post published on his Substack, Kinzinger reflected on the president’s return to power and argued that the early part of his second term has been marked by chaos and recklessness.
“With the 100th day of the Trump presidency here, it’s the perfect time to step back and survey the wreckage,” he wrote. “And when I look across the landscape, I see failure after failure. One phrase from his first inaugural speech keeps coming to mind ‘American carnage.’”
He pointed to a flurry of more than 130 executive orders signed by Trump in just over three months, claiming they have disrupted the economy, the justice system, the education sector, and much of the federal government. He also condemned Trump’s mass pardoning of over 1,600 individuals convicted for their role in the January 6 Capitol riot, and his decision to launch a sweeping trade war, not only with China but with numerous U.S. allies.
Kinzinger, who broke with most of his party when he voted to impeach Trump in 2021, has been one of the former president’s most consistent critics. Since leaving Congress, he has continued to speak out against Trump’s influence over the Republican Party and endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race. Last year, he addressed the Democratic National Convention, telling the audience the Republican Party had abandoned its principles in favor of blind loyalty to one man.
“It has switched its allegiance from the principles that gave it purpose to a man whose only purpose is himself,” Kinzinger said at the time.
When asked about Kinzinger’s criticism, White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly replied dismissively, “Who is Adam Kinzinger?”
