Trump Takes Victory Lap Over Jack Smith

President Donald Trump announced that classified documents, which were the last remaining pieces of special counsel Jack Smith’s now-dismissed federal case against him, have been returned to his possession.

“These documents are being sent to Florida and will one day be included in the Trump Presidential Library,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday. “Justice has finally prevailed. I did absolutely nothing wrong.”

It remains unclear, however, whether all the documents seized during the FBI raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in August 2022 have been returned. According to White House spokesperson Steven Cheung, the situation is still being reviewed, as reported by The Washington Post. Cheung did not provide further comment when contacted by Axios.

Trump holds the distinction of being the only U.S. president ever convicted of a felony, although that conviction—related to a separate case in New York—resulted in no penalties.

In the classified documents case, Trump was accused of improperly handling sensitive government materials after leaving office. However, the case was dismissed last July by Judge Aileen Cannon, whom Trump had appointed. The judge ruled that special counsel Jack Smith’s appointment and funding were unlawful, effectively ending the legal battle.

With this latest development, Trump and his legal team view the return of the documents as a vindication, while questions remain about whether all materials seized in the FBI search have been accounted for.
