Trump Supports Ocasio-Cortez For What?

On Wednesday, President-elect Trump took to Truth Social to comment on Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s recent defeat in her bid to become the leading Democrat on the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. Trump expressed a mix of sympathy and encouragement, stating, “Really too bad that AOC lost the Battle for the Leadership Seat in the Democrat Party. She should keep trying. Someday, she will be successful!”

This remark followed the decision on Tuesday when Representative Gerry Connolly from Virginia was chosen over Ocasio-Cortez. Connolly’s victory came on the heels of strong endorsements, including from the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York, which had recommended him for the role. He also received backing from former Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California.

Connolly brings over a decade of experience on the committee, contrasting with Ocasio-Cortez, who, despite fewer years on the panel, has become widely recognized for her vigorous advocacy of progressive principles.

Earlier this year, in a moment of unexpected commendation, Trump acknowledged Ocasio-Cortez’s political acumen, referring to her as having “a good spark.” He even recalled advising aides to former Representative Joe Crowley of New York during the 2018 primary that Ocasio-Cortez posed a significant political threat— a prediction that came true when she won against Crowley.

After the election results, Ocasio-Cortez voiced concerns about the potential implications of Trump’s presidency, particularly highlighting the threats to various freedoms she anticipates under his administration.
