President Donald Trump clarified on Sunday that he was “being a little bit sarcastic” when he previously promised to end the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia within 24 hours. The statement came during an interview on the Sunday broadcast of “Full Measure,” where Trump addressed his campaign claim of swiftly resolving the conflict.
“Well, I was being a little bit sarcastic when I said that,” Trump explained during the interview. “What I really mean is I’d like to get it settled, and I think I’ll be successful.”
Throughout his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly emphasized his capability to quickly negotiate peace between Ukraine and Russia, asserting it could be accomplished in less than a day if re-elected. Nearly two years ago, Trump confidently told Fox News host Sean Hannity, “If it’s not solved, I will have it solved in 24 hours with Zelensky and Putin,” referencing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump further indicated that a straightforward negotiation strategy existed but refrained from detailing it publicly, stating, “There’s a very easy negotiation to take place. But I don’t want to tell you what it is because then I can’t use that negotiation; it’ll never work. But it’s a very easy negotiation to take place. I will have it solved within one day, peace between them.”
At the time, Trump stressed the urgency of ending the conflict immediately, highlighting that Ukraine faced severe devastation. “The key is the war has to stop now because Ukraine is being obliterated,” Trump emphasized.
Since returning to the White House nearly two months ago, President Trump has continued to prioritize diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the Ukraine-Russia war. Despite these ongoing efforts, a peaceful resolution has yet to be achieved, and the conflict continues to affect global stability.
