Special Poll
President Trump expressed surprise on Friday regarding the unexpected votes from Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, who both opposed his nominee for Secretary of Defense, Army veteran and former Fox News host Pete Hegseth.
“I was very surprised that Collins and Murkowski would do that,” stated Trump.
He also commented on the support from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who voted in favor of advancing Hegseth’s nomination. The president remarked, “Was Mitch a no vote? How about Mitch?” indicating his surprise at the usual voting patterns.
The Senate’s decision moved mostly along party lines, with a 51-49 vote on Thursday to move Hegseth’s nomination forward, despite opposition from Murkowski and Collins along with all Democrats. This preliminary vote paves the way for a final decision expected on Friday, where Hegseth is anticipated to receive the majority support required.
When questioned about his nominee’s chances and the ongoing confirmation process, Trump defended Hegseth, saying, “Look, whatever it is, it is. He’s a good man. I don’t know what’s going to happen — you never know in these situations. But, Pete’s a very, very good man. I hope he makes it; I hope he makes it,” showing a mix of uncertainty and support.
