Trump Proposes Renaming Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America

President-elect Donald Trump has suggested renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, citing concerns about trade and immigration. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump expressed frustration over what he views as unfair treatment of the U.S. by Mexico, particularly on these issues.

“We’re going to call it the Gulf of America,” Trump said. “It’s a beautiful name, and it makes sense. Mexico needs to stop allowing millions of people to come into our country unchecked.”

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) quickly voiced her support for the idea, stating that she plans to introduce legislation to make the name change official. “President Trump’s second term is off to a GREAT start,” Greene posted on X. “I’ll be introducing a bill ASAP to give the Gulf its rightful name: the Gulf of America!”

The comments came as Trump reiterated his concerns about the U.S. trade deficit with Mexico and Canada, issues he has highlighted repeatedly since his election victory in November. He has vowed to impose significant tariffs on both countries, raising questions about future trade relationships.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have both recently spoken with Trump in an attempt to address his tariff concerns. Meanwhile, Trump referred to Mexico as “a very dangerous place” and accused cartels of dominating the country.

The proposal has sparked conversation and debate about its implications, adding another layer of complexity to U.S. relations with its southern neighbor.
