Trump Picks Up Big Win

House Republicans approved a budget resolution late Tuesday night, setting the stage for President Trump’s legislative agenda, just minutes after initially pulling the measure from consideration.

The resolution, which outlines Republican priorities on taxes, border security, and energy policy in a single comprehensive bill, passed by a narrow 217-215 margin and now heads to the Senate for review.

The vote followed a chaotic evening in the House chamber. GOP leaders kept an unrelated vote open for over an hour, working to persuade reluctant members. After briefly announcing they were canceling the budget vote, leadership reversed course just 10 minutes later, leading to its eventual passage.

The outcome marked a significant turnaround for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Republican leaders, who earlier faced resistance from fiscal conservatives concerned about the deficit and moderates wary of deep spending cuts to social programs.

Heading into the vote, Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.), Warren Davidson (R-Ohio), and Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) had expressed opposition, with Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) leaning toward a “no” vote. Their main concern was the extent of proposed spending reductions and their impact on the national deficit.

In the final moments, Spartz, Burchett, and Davidson switched their votes to support the measure, while Massie remained opposed.

Trump played a key role in securing the last-minute votes, personally calling holdouts to rally support and push for the House’s approach over an alternative Senate plan. His involvement proved critical in getting the resolution across the finish line.
