President Trump is reportedly considering Fox News host and former judge Jeanine Pirro for the role of U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., a position currently held on an interim basis by Ed Martin. The potential nomination is being weighed as Trump signals he may withdraw Martin’s name amid growing opposition from Senate Republicans.
While no final decision has been made, sources familiar with the discussions say Pirro is among the leading candidates to take over the high-profile prosecutorial post. ABC News first reported that Pirro was under serious consideration and noted that an announcement could come as early as Thursday. The White House declined to offer any public comment on the matter.
Pirro, a longtime ally of Trump, previously served as a judge and district attorney in Westchester County, New York, where she was elected several times. She currently appears on Fox News as a co-host of the network’s evening panel show “The Five,” though she was notably absent from Thursday’s broadcast amid growing speculation surrounding her potential nomination.
The president’s pivot toward Pirro comes after Martin’s nomination encountered resistance from key Republican lawmakers. Senator Thom Tillis, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, announced he would not support Martin, effectively dooming the nomination due to the Senate’s narrow vote margins.
Martin, who lacks prosecutorial experience, was appointed to the interim post earlier this year. Since taking office, he has made a number of controversial decisions, including reassigning or removing prosecutors involved in cases related to the January 6 Capitol riot. He also previously served as a defense attorney for individuals charged in connection with the events of that day and was a speaker at several rallies held in the aftermath of the 2020 election.
Barring a new nominee being confirmed, Martin is expected to continue serving as interim U.S. attorney until May 20.
