Former President Trump announced on Sunday that he is imposing tariffs, a travel ban, and other measures after Colombia rejected two U.S. flights carrying deported migrants. The decision was made after Colombian President Gustavo Petro declared he would block American deportation flights from entering the country.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “I was just informed that two repatriation flights from the United States, carrying a significant number of illegal criminals, were denied landing in Colombia. This decision was made by Colombia’s Socialist President Gustavo Petro, who is already facing unpopularity among his own citizens.”
Trump criticized Petro’s actions, claiming they jeopardized the safety and security of the United States. In response, he directed his administration to take “urgent and decisive retaliatory measures,” including a 25% tariff on Colombian imports to the U.S. and a travel ban on Colombian government officials and their allies.
“These steps are just the beginning. We will not tolerate the Colombian government’s refusal to honor its obligations to accept the return of the criminals they sent into the United States!” Trump added.
Immigration has been a cornerstone of Trump’s political platform, and his new administration is moving quickly to showcase actions on this issue during his initial days in office.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro responded on social media, stating, “The U.S. cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals. I will not permit American planes carrying Colombian migrants to enter our territory.”
The escalating tension between the two nations reflects broader challenges over migration policies and international relations.
