Trump Monitors from Situation Room as Iran Launches Missile Strike on U.S. Base in Qatar
President Trump was in the Situation Room Monday as Iran launched a retaliatory strike on a U.S. military base in Qatar, escalating tensions just days after American airstrikes targeted Iranian nuclear facilities.
Shortly before the attack, Qatar closed its airspace, and eyewitnesses reported explosions and missile sightings over Doha. Iran’s state TV confirmed the operation, calling it “a mighty and successful response by the armed forces of Iran to America’s aggression.”
The closure of Doha’s airport came after the U.S. and U.K. warned their citizens in Qatar to shelter in place, though no official reason was initially given.
Earlier in the day, the White House defended its weekend airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—saying they had effectively neutralized Iran’s ability to build a nuclear weapon.
“This regime chants ‘death to America’ and ‘death to Israel,’ and now they’ve lost the capability to build a nuclear bomb,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during an interview with ABC News. “This strike has made our homeland safer.”
As the world watches for Iran’s next move, attention has also turned to Moscow, where Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia signaled its willingness to support Iran, adding a new layer of complexity to the growing regional crisis.
