Trump Immigration Ratings Shocker

Donald Trump’s approval rating on immigration is taking a noticeable hit, according to new polling data. Pollster G. Elliott Morris reports that Trump’s net approval on immigration has dropped by nearly seven points since June 8, when it stood at +5.4. As of now, it sits at -1.3, marking the steepest decline since April, when public reaction to the Kilmar Abrego Garcia coverage caused a similar dip. A separate tracker by Nate Silver reflects a six-point drop in the same period, falling from +3.9 to -2.1.

The decline follows Trump’s decision to deploy 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines to Los Angeles in response to reports of violence targeting ICE agents conducting deportation raids. The move has sparked a wave of backlash across the country, with large-scale protests planned for the upcoming weekend. The shift in polling suggests that public sentiment may be turning against Trump’s approach.

Out of the ten most recent polls measuring voter sentiment on immigration, six show Trump with a negative net approval rating, some as low as -15 points. Four polls still place him in positive territory. A Washington Post survey conducted on June 10 found Trump at 37 percent approval and 52 percent disapproval on immigration, giving him a net score of -15 his worst in this polling group. Similarly, a Quinnipiac University poll taken June 5–9 showed him at -11, a noticeable drop from -3 in February. The AP-NORC poll reported a -7 net approval, also down from -2 just last month.

In contrast, polls conducted slightly earlier by John Zogby Strategies and RMG Research painted a much more favorable picture, with Trump enjoying net approval ratings of +16 and +14 respectively. These showed 56 percent approval, far higher than in more recent polls, though even those numbers were down from earlier highs Zogby had Trump at +23 back in January.

Other surveys offer a more nuanced view. Morning Consult’s poll from June 6–8 showed a +9 net approval (51 percent approve, 42 percent disapprove), a slight drop from +12 in May. Meanwhile, YouGov polling for The Economist conducted June 6–9 registered a +4 net rating, down from +7 the previous week.

Despite the dip, some data still shows a significant portion of voters supporting Trump’s broader immigration platform, particularly his push for mass deportations. But the overall trend across polls indicates growing skepticism about the president’s handling of immigration, especially in light of the recent deployment and the public reaction that followed.
