President Trump on Tuesday hinted that a major announcement is coming just before he heads to the Middle East early next week. Sitting alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in the Oval Office, the president said the news would be “as big as it gets” and described it as “very, very positive,” though he declined to share details. He added that if the news were negative, he would say so, but this time, “it is really, really positive.”
The president is scheduled to depart for the Middle East on Monday, with stops planned in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. His trip is expected to conclude on May 16. He said the announcement would likely come on Thursday, Friday, or Monday before he leaves.
He described the forthcoming news as “one of the most important announcements that has been made in many years about a certain subject, very important subject,” assuring those present they wouldn’t want to miss it.
Carney, preparing to deliver his remarks, joked, “I’m on the edge of my seat,” prompting Trump to laugh and lightly tap his leg in response.
The upcoming trip has also reignited hopes among some American Israeli families of hostages held by Hamas, who believe a diplomatic breakthrough could be within reach. Trump has been pushing to end the conflict and broker a major agreement between Saudi Arabia and Israel. However, progress has stalled, as Riyadh remains firm in its stance that normalization is off the table while Israel continues military operations.
