Trump Goes After 25th Amendment

Trump Supports Modifying the 25th Amendment: At a rally in Mosinee, Wisconsinformer President Donald Trump voiced his support for modifying the 25th Amendment to allow the removal of a U.S. vice president if they lie or cover up the incapacity of the president.

Trump’s Statement: Trump told his supporters that if a vice president is involved in covering up a president’s incapacity, it should be grounds for immediate impeachment and removal. He referenced the 25th Amendment as a tool to address such a situation.

Targeting Vice President Harris: Trump’s comments come as Republicans, including Trump, have criticized Vice President Kamala Harris, accusing her of covering up concerns about President Biden’s mental fitness, particularly after his poor debate performance in June and his decision not to run for another term.

Republicans Call for 25th Amendment Use: After Biden’s debate performance, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.)and other Republicans suggested that Biden’s Cabinet should consider using the 25th Amendment to remove the president due to his declining condition.

Ratification of an Amendment: For any amendment to the Constitution to be ratified, three-fourths of state legislatures must approve it. Trump himself was impeached twice by the House of Representatives during his presidency but was not convicted in the Senate.

Political Strategy: Trump’s push to modify the 25th Amendment is part of his strategy to attack his new political rivals, even after Biden’s decision to step aside. Trump has continued to target Democrats, accusing them of orchestrating a “coup” by pressuring Biden to withdraw and clear the way for a new Democratic ticket.
