Special Poll
President-elect Trump recently revisited the idea of the U.S. acquiring Greenland while announcing PayPal co-founder Ken Howery as his choice for U.S. ambassador to Denmark. This suggestion follows his previous interest during his first administration, where he proposed purchasing Greenland, an autonomous territory under Denmark. Trump even canceled a state visit to Denmark after officials made it clear that Greenland was not for sale.
Over the weekend, Trump also called on Panamanian authorities to reduce fees for U.S. ships using the Panama Canal or return its control to the United States. Tying these issues together, Trump posted on Truth Social, stating, “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.” He also expressed confidence in Howery’s ability to represent U.S. interests effectively.
Historically, the United States has shown interest in Greenland multiple times since 1867, recognizing its strategic and economic value. Although geographically part of North America, Greenland has strong geopolitical ties to Europe through its association with Denmark. It has even received funding from the European Union due to its status as an overseas territory linked to the bloc.
Greenland’s significance extends beyond geopolitics. The territory provides access to the Arctic, a region where nations are increasingly competing for resources and influence. As the effects of climate change become more evident, interest in the Arctic’s untapped potential has grown. Russia, for example, has made territorial claims near Greenland’s Exclusive Economic Zone in recent years.
The island itself is rich in resources such as gold, silver, copper, uranium, and potentially vast reserves of oil in its surrounding waters. These natural assets, combined with its strategic Arctic location, make Greenland a point of interest for global powers. Whether Trump’s renewed interest will translate into actionable plans remains to be seen, as no further details on his proposal have been shared.
