A new poll has found that a greater proportion of Americans trust President Donald Trump to run the country more than they trust the Democrats, despite his sliding approval ratings. The Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos survey revealed that while Trump faces negative polling on major issues like the economy, he still commands more trust than Democrats in Congress when it comes to handling the nation’s most pressing challenges.
This dynamic offers Trump some reassurance as he looks ahead to the November 2026 midterm elections. Democrats, meanwhile, continue to grapple with internal divisions between progressives and moderates and a lack of clear leadership. Although experts suggest Democrats could still reclaim the House of Representatives in the upcoming elections, the poll numbers show they have significant ground to cover with voters.
According to the survey, 37 percent of Americans trust Trump more to address the country’s major problems, compared to 30 percent who place more trust in Democrats. Another 30 percent said they trust neither, and 4 percent said they trust both equally. The poll, conducted from April 18-22 among 2,464 U.S. adults, carries a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points.
The poll also highlighted broader discontent with both Trump and the Democratic Party. While 60 percent believe Trump is out of touch with the concerns of most Americans, an even larger 69 percent say the same about the Democratic Party. Only 30 percent believe the Democrats are in touch with everyday concerns, compared to 39 percent who feel Trump is.
Trump’s overall approval rating has fallen to 39 percent, down six points from February, with 55 percent disapproving a two-point increase in disapproval over the same period. His handling of major policy areas has also drawn criticism: 61 percent disapprove of his economic management, while 39 percent approve. On immigration, 53 percent disapprove of his approach, while 46 percent approve.
Despite these numbers, the fact that Trump remains more trusted than Democrats highlights the continued political volatility as both sides prepare for an intense battle in 2026.
