Trump Gets Big Bad News

A new poll shows that a majority of Americans believe President Donald Trump’s major spending bill will mainly help the wealthy while hurting middle- and lower-income individuals. The legislation, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, spans over 1,000 pages and includes roughly $4.9 trillion in tax breaks, budget cuts, and new Medicaid work requirements. It narrowly passed the House last month by a vote of 215 to 214, with Republicans Thomas Massie and Warren Davidson joining all House Democrats in opposing it.

The Congressional Budget Office has projected that the bill would add $2.4 trillion to the national debt while reducing taxes by $3.75 trillion. As the Senate takes up debate on the bill, public concern is growing especially following Elon Musk’s outspoken criticism, which has intensified his public feud with Trump.

According to a CBS News/YouGov poll, 47 percent of respondents believe the bill will hurt middle-class Americans, compared to 31 percent who think it will benefit them. For low-income individuals, 54 percent of those surveyed said the bill would have a negative impact, while just 31 percent saw any benefit. In contrast, 60 percent of respondents believe the legislation will favor wealthy individuals, with only 7 percent saying it would hurt them.

The poll, conducted from June 4 to June 6, surveyed 2,428 adults and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.
