President Trump received some bad news Thursday morning as his approval numbers took a dip following a very public fallout with Elon Musk, marking a reversal after a brief period of improvement.
According to the latest Decision Desk HQ/The Hill polling average, Trump’s approval rating now stands at 47.5 percent, two points below his disapproval rating of 49.5 percent. That negative 2-point net approval rating is a step back from last week, when he briefly entered positive territory for the first time since early March.
His net favorability rating also declined, dropping from 4.5 points underwater to 6.4 points underwater in just a matter of days. Trump began his second term with positive approval and favorability numbers, but both metrics gradually eroded as he approached his 100th day in office. Throughout May, there had been signs of recovery, including a day June 5 when his approval rating narrowly exceeded disapproval.
That progress appears to have stalled amid escalating tensions with Musk, one of Trump’s most high-profile backers during the 2024 election and his early return to office. The relationship soured in recent days after Musk harshly criticized Trump’s flagship tax and spending plan, calling the “big beautiful bill” a “disgusting abomination” in multiple posts on X. He didn’t stop there Musk openly supported efforts to impeach Trump and even claimed Trump wouldn’t have won re-election without his financial backing.
Musk, who poured millions into supporting Trump’s 2024 campaign, had been considered a close ally before the rift. Now, the highly public feud seems to be taking a measurable toll on Trump’s public standing, creating new political headwinds as the administration tries to push its legislative agenda forward.
