During an interview on Sunday, Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota declined to confirm whether he fully supports all of President-elect Trump’s Cabinet nominees.
Thune stated, “As the leader of the Senate, my expectation is that we’ll work to get the president the key personnel he needs as quickly as possible in the positions he prioritizes.”
The confirmation process for Trump’s Cabinet remains uncertain, as several Republican senators have refrained from fully endorsing some of the more contentious nominees. Issues like Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s vaccine stance, allegations of sexual misconduct against Pete Hegseth, and Tulsi Gabbard’s 2017 meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have sparked concerns. While some GOP lawmakers have voiced unequivocal support, others remain hesitant, adding complexity to the process as Republicans recently secured a narrow Senate majority.
Thune’s own relationship with Trump has been nuanced. Following his criticism of Trump during events like the January 6 Capitol riot, Thune has sought to mend ties, meeting Trump at Mar-a-Lago last year and collaborating on key Republican priorities. His ability to appeal to mainstream Republicans while working toward reconciliation with Trump places him in a position to bridge divides within the party during this critical time.
