Trump Questions Taylor Swift’s Political Authenticity
Former President Trump has cast doubt on whether Taylor Swift is “legitimately liberal” or if her political stance is “just an act,” pondering the true beliefs of the “Shake it Off” singer.
In an upcoming book titled “Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass,” authored by Variety’s co-Editor-in-Chief Ramin Setoodeh, Trump is quoted discussing Swift’s political views. “I think she’s beautiful — very beautiful!” Trump remarked when asked about Swift.
In an excerpt published Monday in Variety, Trump commented, “I think she’s liberal. She probably doesn’t like Trump. But she is liberal, or is that just an act?” He further questioned, “She’s legitimately liberal? It’s not an act? It surprises me that a country star can be successful being liberal,” before being reminded that Swift transitioned to pop music years ago.
Despite Swift’s success, including her 14th album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” topping the Billboard 200 earlier this year, Trump admitted he isn’t very familiar with her music. “Don’t know it well,” he said about the “Eras” performer’s work, though he acknowledged, “I hear she’s very talented,” and reiterated his admiration for her appearance, saying, “I think she’s very beautiful, actually — unusually beautiful!”
A representative for Swift did not respond to a request for comment regarding Trump’s statements.
Swift broke her long-held political silence in 2018 to endorse two Democrats in a Tennessee House and Senate race. She has been openly critical of Trump, accusing him of “gaslighting the American public” in 2019. Ahead of the 2020 presidential election, Swift endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, stating she would “proudly vote” for them. “Under their leadership,” Swift said in an interview, “I believe America has a chance to start the healing process it so desperately needs.”
