President Trump on Saturday issued a scathing rebuke of his predecessor following the release of audio recordings that captured former President Biden struggling to answer questions during a 2023 interview with then-special counsel Robert Hur about classified documents discovered at his private home.
Trump criticized Biden’s mental acuity and took fresh aim at the use of an autopen for official duties. He tied both issues to his broader claims about election fraud.
“Whoever had control of the ‘AUTOPEN’ is looking to be a bigger and bigger scandal by the moment,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, reviving his unproven allegations about the 2020 election. “It is a major part of the real crime THAT THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OF 2020 WAS RIGGED AND STOLEN!”
He went on to say that “millions and millions of people knew that,” but accused Democrats of launching “a campaign of inoculation and innocence like none that had ever been waged before.”
Trump’s comments came hours after full audio of the interview between Biden and Hur was published. The recordings showed Biden struggling to recall key dates, including the timeline of his vice presidency, the death of his son Beau, and when Trump was first elected.
Despite concluding that Biden “willfully” retained the classified documents, the special counsel opted not to bring charges, stating that a jury would likely view Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory.” The Justice Department released a transcript of the interview but had resisted releasing the audio, citing concerns about setting precedent.
Trump responded by saying the decision to release any audio publicly should ultimately be made by Attorney General Pam Bondi.
