President Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday night to deliver some of his most forceful remarks yet about Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of having gone “absolutely CRAZY” and warning that his actions could bring about the downfall of Russia. The comments followed earlier remarks Trump made to reporters in New Jersey, where he criticized both Putin and the ongoing war in Ukraine more directly than he has in the past.
Trump began by saying he’s always had a good relationship with Putin but now believes something has changed. “Something has happened to him,” he wrote. “He has gone absolutely CRAZY!” He went on to condemn the ongoing attacks in Ukraine, stating that Putin is “needlessly killing a lot of people,” and clarifying that he’s not only referring to soldiers. “Missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever,” he said.
Trump reiterated his belief that Putin wants to take all of Ukraine, not just part of it, and warned that if he continues down that path, it will ultimately lead to Russia’s ruin. The message marks a sharp turn in tone for Trump, who has often been criticized for being too soft on Putin in the past.
He also didn’t hold back in criticizing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who had earlier that day expressed frustration over what he described as the silence from the U.S. and other nations after a Russian missile and drone attack killed a dozen people. Trump responded by saying Zelensky is “doing his Country no favors by talking the way he does.” He added, “Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don’t like it, and it better stop.”
Trump once again emphasized that the war in Ukraine would never have happened if he had been in office. He concluded his statement by distancing himself from the conflict entirely, stating, “This is Zelenskyy’s, Putin’s, and Biden’s War, not ‘Trump’s.’ I am only helping to put out the big and ugly fires that have been started through Gross Incompetence and Hatred.”
