Trump Demands What?

President-elect Trump expressed strong objections on Sunday to the possibility of former special counsel Jack Smith releasing a report on investigations related to him. In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized the validity of the investigations, labeling them as a “complete and total Witch Hunt” and questioning the legitimacy of Smith’s involvement after his dismissal by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Trump argued that the investigations were politically motivated and a waste of governmental funds, describing the efforts against him as a form of political persecution. He further dismissed the accusations and documents compiled by Smith as ineffective and ridiculed by the public, emphasizing his recent electoral victory as a mandate from the electorate.

The DOJ has been attempting to publish Smith’s final report on his investigation into Trump. However, ongoing legal challenges have emerged, particularly concerning Trump and his two co-defendants in the Mar-a-Lago documents case. These challenges are focused on preventing the release of sections of the report dealing with the Mar-a-Lago incident and Trump’s actions following the 2020 presidential election.

Attorney General Merrick Garland has indicated that he will not release the part of the report concerning the Mar-a-Lago case due to ongoing legal proceedings involving Trump’s co-defendants. Meanwhile, these defendants have sought intervention from U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who recently agreed to delay the release of the report by three days after a decision by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. The defendants had also sought emergency assistance from the appeals court to prevent the publication of the report, which was not granted.
