Trump Cleans House, Shocks America

President Trump reportedly dismissed at least 12 inspectors general across various federal government agencies on Friday night, according to multiple sources. These terminations add to the ongoing government changes seen since Trump’s inauguration and may conflict with federal law, which requires a 30-day notice to Congress before firing a Senate-confirmed inspector general.

The Washington Post, which first reported the firings, identified the impacted departments as Defense, State, Transportation, Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development, Interior, Energy, Commerce, Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Agency. However, the Justice Department’s inspector general was reportedly not affected, according to the New York Times, which cited three anonymous sources familiar with the situation.

Michael Missal, the inspector general for the Department of Veterans Affairs, confirmed his dismissal in an email to his staff. “I wanted to let you know that I was informed tonight by the White House that I had been fired as the inspector general,” Missal wrote. He also noted that his understanding was that several other inspectors general had been dismissed as well.
