President Trump sparked another round of ridicule and confusion with a Truth Social post on Sunday that simply read “bela.” The odd one-word post quickly reminded many of his infamous “covfefe” tweet from 2017, when he left the internet puzzled by what appeared to be a late-night typo.
Critics and political opponents immediately seized on the moment. California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s press office fired back, posting, “We broke Donald Trump,” mocking the president and suggesting that the strange message was yet another sign of his instability. Newsom’s team also recycled old jabs, bringing up Trump’s “tiny hands” in a separate post to provoke him into an online spat.
Others piled on as well. The Lincoln Project declared “bela” the new “covfefe,” while frequent Trump critic George Conway joked that it was a “blend” of the original viral slip-up. Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) chimed in, turning the moment into a dig at GOP Oversight Chair James Comer.
Speculation swirled about whether “bela” was simply a typo, possibly meant to reference Belarus, or if it was an unfinished thought. Some pointed out that with two L’s, “bella” means beautiful in Italian though Trump never clarified what he intended.
Democrats and media figures went further, suggesting the bizarre post might signal something deeper. They argued it could be evidence of Trump showing signs of cognitive decline, with several commentators openly questioning whether the president is going senile.
For many, the “bela” post felt like déjà vu another strange, unexplained moment from Trump that quickly overshadowed more pressing political and global matters, including an upcoming high-level meeting on the Russia-Ukraine war.
