Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) recently voiced strong concerns about House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), suggesting that Johnson’s leadership could cost the Republican Party its House majority in the 2026 elections if he remains in his role. Massie’s pointed remarks highlight growing tension within the GOP as Johnson’s future as Speaker hangs in the balance.
“Johnson is not suited for this role,” Massie stated in a post on the platform X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday. His comments were a direct response to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who criticized Republicans opposing Johnson, accusing them of indirectly aiding Democrats. Gingrich had urged those against Johnson to clarify their goals beyond creating disruption.
Massie pushed back, emphasizing that Johnson falls short of the qualities needed to maintain Republican dominance. “We need a Speaker who can energize the public and clearly communicate our message through the media,” Massie wrote. “Johnson nearly cost us our majority during a strong year for Trump and is guaranteed to do so in 2026.”
Massie’s disapproval comes at a critical time, as the House GOP prepares for a vote on Johnson’s leadership later this week. His opposition is particularly striking given that former President Donald Trump recently endorsed Johnson for another term, calling his leadership vital for advancing conservative goals.
For Massie, however, Johnson’s record speaks otherwise. He criticized Johnson’s initial rise to Speakership, arguing that it was less about leadership skills and more about being a compromise candidate. “Johnson won the first time because he had no prior leadership record to scrutinize and everyone was exhausted from repeated votes. He was the least objectionable option then, but that is no longer the case,” Massie wrote.
Adding to the tension, Massie accused Johnson of relying on Democratic support during his initial Speakership race, further fracturing Republican unity. Johnson has also faced backlash for his handling of recent legislative efforts, including failed attempts to pass a continuing resolution.
As the GOP gears up for the upcoming Speaker vote, Johnson faces immense pressure to prove he can effectively lead the party. The outcome may depend heavily on member attendance and voting dynamics, with one misstep potentially ending his term as Speaker.
