Trump Cancels ABC Debate, Proposes Fox News Alternative
Former President Donald Trump has withdrawn from the scheduled ABC debate, suggesting instead a face-off on Fox News. This move has led to a stalemate between the two campaigns, casting doubt on whether any debates will occur in the general election.
- Trump’s Announcement: On Friday night, Trump announced on Truth Social that the ABC debate set for September 10 was “terminated.” He cited President Joe Biden ending his campaign and ongoing legal issues with the network as reasons for the cancellation. Trump had initially agreed to the ABC debate in May, despite his legal conflicts with the network and anchor George Stephanopoulos. ABC News anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis were slated to moderate this debate.
- Proposal for Fox News Debate: Instead of the ABC debate, Trump proposed a new debate on September 4 on Fox News, to be held in Pennsylvania. He specified that Fox anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum would moderate the debate, which would take place “in an arena” with a live audience, differing from the June Trump-Biden debate, which had no live audience.
- Harris Campaign’s Response: The Harris campaign expressed willingness to consider further debates but emphasized the importance of the previously agreed-upon debate. This response has created an apparent deadlock between the two camps, with no clear resolution in sight.
The situation remains fluid, and it’s uncertain whether the two sides will agree on a new debate format or date.
