Robert De Niro has expressed bewilderment over why voters are not taking Donald Trump “seriously,” drawing parallels between the former president and infamous dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.
During an appearance on “The View” on Tuesday, the “Ezra” actor said, “I don’t understand why people are not taking him seriously.” De Niro, one of Hollywood’s most vocal critics of Trump, elaborated, “Because you read about it historically in other countries that they didn’t take the people seriously — Hitler and Mussolini, they’re fools and clowns.”
De Niro questioned why anyone would doubt Trump’s intentions: “Who does not think that this guy is going to do exactly what he says he’s going to do?” He continued, “He’s done it already. And then what? We’re gonna sit around and say, what, ‘We told you so?’”
The 80-year-old Academy Award winner warned that Trump’s re-election would profoundly alter the country. “It’s gonna happen. If he gets elected, it’s going to change this country for everybody,” De Niro stated. He emphasized the potential consequences, especially for Trump’s supporters: “Those people who support him with anger and hate — because that’s what he’s about — they’re going to see.”
Whoopi Goldberg, one of the co-hosts of the ABC daytime talk show, added her concerns, suggesting Trump’s ambitions could extend beyond a second term: “If he becomes president again, he is not going to not stop being president. You understand this? His idea is to stay in until he drops dead.”
De Niro agreed, saying, “That’s it. He’s not conceding it now. So imagine if he actually did win the election — it’s over. We’re going to have such civil strife.”
Trump has previously stated that if re-elected, he would not seek a third term, which is prohibited by the Constitution. Last year, Trump remarked, “When somebody says eight years, we need eight years, no. In six months to a year, many of the problems, almost all of the problems that you and I have just spoken about will be solved.”
De Niro has consistently criticized Trump over the years, famously declaring he wanted to “punch” him in the face and calling him a “flat-out blatant racist.” Trump has responded by calling De Niro a “very low IQ individual.”
