Trump Attacked By GOP Senator

Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina and a close ally of former President Donald Trump, acknowledged in an interview with NBC News’ Kristen Welker that Trump “technically” violated the law when he fired more than a dozen inspectors general on Friday.

The mass firing sparked backlash, with critics accusing Trump of attempting to replace independent government watchdogs with loyalists. Despite potential legal violations, a past Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity provides broad protection, allowing presidents significant flexibility in their actions without facing consequences.

A source confirmed to Newsweek that several inspectors general were indeed dismissed. These officials, who serve within federal agencies, are responsible for investigating waste, fraud, and abuses of power. Their work includes audits, evaluations, and special reviews. According to Reuters, 17 inspectors general across multiple departments, including State, Defense, and Transportation, received termination emails from the White House. NBC News reported that Hannibal “Mike” Ware, head of the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency, was among the 18 watchdogs dismissed.

Many of the ousted officials were originally appointed during Trump’s first term, though Michael Horowitz, the Department of Justice’s inspector general, remained in his position. Federal law requires the president to provide Congress with a detailed, case-specific rationale at least 30 days before firing inspectors general. In a letter to White House personnel director Sergio Gor, the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency reminded the administration of this requirement. However, Trump defended the decision, calling the firings a routine action. This move closely resembles his 2020 decision to remove five inspectors general from their roles.

During his NBC interview, Graham dismissed concerns that Trump was simply replacing these officials with loyalists, stating that election winners are expected to install people who share their views. When asked about Trump’s failure to provide the legally required 30-day notice, Graham admitted it was a violation but downplayed its significance. He emphasized his support for Trump’s leadership and expressed confidence in his direction for the country.
