Poland has elected Karol Nawrocki, a conservative nationalist closely aligned with U.S. President Donald Trump, as its next president. Nawrocki’s victory marks a significant political shift that could shape the trajectory of European politics and Poland’s relationship with the United States. He is expected to officially take office on August 6.
Nawrocki received personal support from Trump just weeks before the election. During a high-profile visit to the White House, the two leaders met in the Oval Office, posed for photos, and exchanged enthusiastic gestures, including a thumbs-up. Nawrocki later told Polish media that Trump confidently told him, “you will win,” interpreting it as both encouragement and a signal of awareness from the American government about Poland’s political climate. Nawrocki had also participated in the National Day of Prayer while in Washington, further reinforcing the sense of shared values between his campaign and Trump’s administration.
The Trump administration’s endorsement extended beyond symbolic gestures. At CPAC’s inaugural gathering in Poland last week, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem delivered a forceful endorsement of Nawrocki, urging Polish voters to elect him in order to restore traditional conservative values in Europe. Noem told the crowd she had recently met with Nawrocki and emphasized he was the right person to lead Poland at this pivotal moment.
She made it clear that Nawrocki’s alignment with Trump’s policies would help Poland maintain a strong alliance with the United States. Noem promised that with Nawrocki in office, Poland would have continued U.S. military support, including high-quality American-made defense equipment. She stressed that electing a leader who shared Trump’s vision would help Poland secure its borders, protect its communities, and preserve national values under the umbrella of strengthened U.S.-Polish cooperation.
The election result is being seen not only as a domestic political win for Poland’s right but also as part of a broader ideological realignment in Europe. Nawrocki’s presidency is expected to challenge EU liberal norms and could reinforce the rise of nationalist, populist movements across the continent, emboldened by partnerships with like-minded leaders such as Trump.
