Top Republican Says Trump ‘Not God’ But A

Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan (R) harshly criticized former President Donald Trump for obstructing the passage of the latest government funding bill with his demand for a voter citizenship verification measure.

During his Wednesday appearance on CNN’s “NewsNight With Abby Phillip,” Duncan expressed his frustration with Trump’s interference in policy matters, stating bluntly that Trump was not above reproach and labeling him a “loser.”

Duncan vented his anger about the ongoing political antics. “It’s hard to decide what makes me angrier—whether it’s Trump’s efforts to derail sound policy and essential legislation, or the sheer foolishness that prevails, with lawmakers who seem barely capable of understanding basic economic principles, all for some fleeting social media recognition,” he said during the interview.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump urged his party to ensure the inclusion of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which mandates citizenship proof for voting, within any stopgap legislation. Trump emphasized that without the complete enactment of the SAVE Act, Republicans should reject any temporary funding measures.

This stance contributed to the defeat of the proposed Republican budget, as fourteen Republicans, along with the majority of Democrats, rejected the bill due to their refusal to support the SAVE Act. Duncan shared with Phillip his exasperation over the political maneuvering, likening government budgeting failures to personal financial irresponsibility that could lead to severe consequences like imprisonment or personal losses.

Duncan concluded by urging his party to strive towards becoming a party that embraces problem-solving, cooperation, and bipartisan efforts.
