House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat from New York, recently spoke about former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, emphasizing the respect she has shown toward him. Jeffries’ comments come in response to discussions within the Democratic Party about Pelosi’s public statements following the 2024 election.
Some Democrats have expressed frustration, feeling that Pelosi’s remarks have overshadowed Jeffries’ leadership. Pelosi had suggested in an interview with The New York Times that President Biden should have decided against running for re-election earlier. She noted that such a decision might have allowed Democrats to hold an open primary and explore other candidates.
This perspective has drawn criticism from certain members of the party. One senior House Democrat even suggested that Pelosi should take a step back from the public spotlight. Despite these concerns, Jeffries downplayed any notion of conflict or tension during an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press. He described Pelosi as being “incredibly respectful” toward him and the broader leadership team.
Jeffries also spoke warmly of Pelosi, acknowledging her as one of the most significant public servants in American history. He highlighted the privilege of building on her legacy and working closely with her. When asked directly if Pelosi’s comments were undermining his leadership, Jeffries dismissed the idea with a clear “No.”
