Top Democrat Changes Party To Republican

A longtime member of the Kentucky General Assembly has officially changed her party affiliation.

State Senator Robin Webb, who represents Grayson in Carter County, is now registered as a Republican after spending her entire legislative career as a Democrat. Webb, who began serving in the House in 1999 and has been in the state Senate since 2009, confirmed her decision in an interview Friday.

She explained that the switch has been under consideration for some time, noting that her personal values and legislative priorities remain unchanged.

“I just want people to know where I stand. I know who I am — that’s not changing,” Webb said. “I’m not changing my priorities. I’m not changing my advocacy positions. And my votes will remain the same on subject matter. I think everyone knows that.”

Webb emphasized that her decision is grounded in a desire to better reflect her district and not based on political expediency.

Her move drew a response from colleagues on both sides of the aisle. State Senator Gerald Neal, a Democrat, acknowledged the significance of party labels but stressed the importance of putting the public first.

“We’ve got to think of the people of Kentucky,” Neal said. “Sometimes we get into this, you know, ‘I’m on this team’ or ‘that team,’ and I understand that — that’s our system, and I respect that. But at the end of the day, we’ve got to do what’s right.”

With Webb’s switch, Republicans now hold 32 of the 38 seats in the Kentucky Senate, giving the GOP its largest supermajority in the chamber’s history.
