Tainted Democrat To Challenge Trump Republicans

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is on the verge of potentially entering the race for New York City mayor, but some Democrats are already considering him for a larger political stage—the 2028 presidential election.

Following their defeat in November, many Democrats are searching for a strong leader who can not only steer the party forward but also challenge President Trump and his policy decisions during his second term. Some believe Cuomo’s bold and confrontational style could position him as a dark horse candidate in what is expected to be a highly competitive race.

Observers note that his potential candidacy could resemble the dynamic of spring 2020, when Cuomo frequently clashed with Trump during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The two leaders often exchanged public criticisms as Cuomo navigated the crisis in New York while Trump responded at the federal level.

“If Andrew Cuomo becomes mayor of New York, he could very well be Trump’s chief antagonist starting in 2026, which could give Democrats a voice to rally around, however imperfect a messenger he may be,” said Democratic strategist Jamal Simmons.

Cuomo stepped down as governor in 2021 following sexual harassment allegations and criticism over how his administration reported COVID-19 deaths in the state. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
