The Democratic Minority Leader expressed conditional willingness to collaborate with President-elect Donald Trump on his proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” He stipulated that his support would hinge on Trump first agreeing to a substantive plan aimed at reducing costs for Americans.
Trump, who is preparing to start his second term, has recently intensified his discussions about expanding U.S. territory to include places like Greenland and the Panama Canal, and even suggested that Canada should become part of the United States. In a recent press conference, Trump proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico, despite lacking the authority to unilaterally change its name on an international level.
The Gulf of Mexico, which borders Mexico, the United States, and Cuba, has held its name for over 400 years, predating the existence of the U.S. Any official name change internationally would likely involve the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), which coordinates the charting of global water bodies. Both the U.S. and Mexico are members of the IHO, but Trump alone cannot effect such a change recognized internationally.
During a Senate floor speech, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer humorously critiqued Trump’s renaming idea before stating his openness to assist with renaming the gulf at the federal level, although he acknowledged this would likely not impact the globally recognized name.
Schumer criticized Trump for using such proposals to distract from more pressing issues, arguing that these do not address the immediate concerns of reducing everyday costs for Americans. He emphasized that while Trump’s suggestions might garner media attention and project a tough image, they do little to help Americans with practical issues like grocery and pharmacy costs. Schumer concluded by emphasizing that any cooperation on renaming the gulf would only proceed if Trump first commits to a genuine effort to lower prices for Americans.
