President-elect Trump’s incoming press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, has indicated that one of Trump’s first executive orders may address Title 42. Speaking on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures,” Leavitt outlined what actions the American people can expect on Trump’s first day back in office next month.
Leavitt stated that Trump plans to use executive orders to fulfill key campaign promises. These include securing the southern border, expediting permits for fracking and drilling, and taking action on cultural and social issues. “He will use the power of his pen to deliver on many of the promises he made to the American people on the campaign trail,” she explained, adding that immigration policy, energy independence, and what she described as “transgender insanity” are high priorities.
When host Maria Bartiromo asked about immigration-specific actions, Leavitt noted that Title 42 is under consideration. “Securing the southern border, perhaps looking at Title 42. Many of these executive actions are still being considered by our policy teams and also our lawyers,” she said. Title 42, a policy introduced during Trump’s presidency, allowed the U.S. to expel asylum-seekers as a public health measure during the COVID-19 pandemic. The policy ended in May 2023 when the public health emergency was officially lifted.
Revisiting Title 42 is just one part of Trump’s broader immigration agenda. On the campaign trail, Trump proposed conducting a large-scale deportation effort targeting undocumented migrants. Experts have raised questions about the feasibility of such an initiative and its potential economic consequences.
Leavitt reaffirmed Trump’s commitment to the plan, stating, “President Trump is also going to launch the largest mass deportation of illegal criminals in American history. He can do that immediately by empowering federal and local law enforcement to work together to identify, to detain, and to deport these illegal criminals that we know are roaming freely in our country.”
