Pope Leo XIV Vs Trump Controversy

Cardinal Robert Prevost, who became the first American to be elected pope on Thursday, has a history of sharing views on social media that subtly criticized various policies of the Trump administration. An examination of his past activity on the platform X reveals a number of posts and shared articles that expressed concern about issues including immigration, capital punishment, and gun violence.

Now known as Pope Leo XIV, Prevost previously shared a column in February that challenged Vice President Vance’s interpretation of the Christian principle of “ordo amoris,” or the proper order of love. He also reposted a 2015 article that described anti-immigration rhetoric during Trump’s campaign as dangerous, and voiced support for more compassionate responses to migrants and gun reform measures in the wake of mass shootings.

In a 2023 interview with the Vatican News Service, Prevost reflected on the influence and limitations of digital platforms, acknowledging both the opportunity and risk that come with communicating in such a visible space. He emphasized the importance of using discernment before posting online, noting the potential to inadvertently deepen divisions.

“Social media can be an important tool to communicate the Gospel message reaching millions of people,” he said. “At the same time, the world today, which is constantly changing, presents situations where we really have to think several times before speaking or before writing a message… in full view of everyone.”

He added that at times, engaging on such platforms could unintentionally intensify public controversy or conflict.

Born in Chicago, Prevost gained prominence within the Catholic Church through decades of service in South America, and holds both U.S. and Peruvian citizenship. Upon assuming his role as Pope Leo XIV, he used his first public address to deliver a message focused on the importance of unity and healing.
