Pope Attacks Trump

The first U.S. bishop appointed by Pope Leo XIV is urging Catholic clergy and parish leaders to stand with migrants during their immigration court proceedings. Rev. Michael Pham, who was named bishop of San Diego in May, joined Rev. Felipe Pulido and Rev. Ramón Bejarano both appointed under Pope Francis in calling for priests, deacons, and other faith leaders to accompany migrants and demonstrate solidarity.

In a letter released Wednesday, the bishops announced that a group of clergy plans to visit the federal courthouse on June 20, International Refugee Day, to show visible support for individuals attending court hearings related to their immigration status. They wrote that the goal is to offer a sense of dignity and compassion to those facing legal proceedings and the threat of deportation.

Their message comes at a time of growing criticism from faith-based communities over President Trump’s aggressive deportation strategy, which has sparked backlash from religious leaders and the Vatican. Shortly after Pope Leo’s election in May, his brother John Prevost told reporters that the pontiff was “not happy with what’s going on with immigration,” describing his deep concern for marginalized people.

The San Diego diocese also plans to hold simultaneous Masses on June 20 dedicated to immigrants and refugees across its parishes. In the letter, the bishops acknowledged the complexity and emotional toll of the current immigration process. “Migrants and refugees are being asked to appear in court by the government, only to face expedited removal orders once they show up,” they wrote. “Our presence as faith leaders can make a difference in how they are treated.”

They emphasized the importance of standing in solidarity: “The people of faith stand with immigrants and refugees.”

Since President Trump returned to office in January 2025, his administration has expanded immigration enforcement under the mandate of his second-term platform. While supporters argue the crackdown restores law and order, the policy has become increasingly controversial due to reports of mistaken arrests and overly harsh tactics.

Tensions escalated further last Friday when widespread ICE raids in Los Angeles sparked public outrage and protests. In response, Trump deployed National Guard units and U.S. Marines to the city, overriding California Governor Gavin Newsom’s objections. The weekend saw violent clashes, including burning vehicles, motorcyclists breaking through police lines, and law enforcement using tear gas to disperse crowds.
