Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) responded with humor to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-Ga.) new appointment as chair of a House Oversight and Accountability subcommittee, which will coordinate with President-elect Donald Trump’s newly announced “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE). The department, led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy as advisory heads, aims to reduce federal spending and streamline government operations.
Ocasio-Cortez shared her thoughts on the development on the social platform X, writing, “Absolutely dying at those two now getting assigned the ‘privilege’ of ‘working’ with MTG. That is actually hilarious. Enjoy, fellas! Very prestigious post you have there.”
A source had previously revealed that Greene had already met with members of the incoming DOGE team, including Ramaswamy. Ocasio-Cortez followed up with additional commentary, saying, “This is good, actually. She barely shows up and doesn’t do the reading. To borrow a phrase I saw elsewhere, it’s like giving someone an unplugged controller.”
This marks a significant shift for Greene, who was stripped of her committee assignments during her first term in 2021, when Democrats controlled the House. The removal came after past social media activity involving conspiracy theories and violent rhetoric against Democrats. Now, Greene will lead the Delivering on Government Efficiency subcommittee, a position confirmed by House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.). Comer lauded Greene for her tenacity, calling her someone who is “not afraid to back down or walk away from a fight.”
Greene defended her qualifications for the role, citing her background as a construction company owner as a foundation for understanding workplace protections and addressing inefficiencies. She emphasized her commitment to holding government employees accountable.
“In the private sector, if you’re not doing a good job, you get fired,” Greene wrote on X. “But for some reason, in government, bad employees — whether they’re failing to do the job they were hired to do or working in roles that are no longer needed — never get fired.”
Greene added that this dynamic is unfair to hardworking taxpayers and pledged to enact change. “This is incredibly unfair to the hard-working taxpayers of our country, and it’s about to change,” she wrote.
The collaboration between Greene, Musk, and Ramaswamy, along with the creation of the DOGE, sets the stage for what Trump’s administration promises will be a bold reimagining of federal government efficiency.
