The National Football League (NFL) has announced that it will change the phrase displayed on one of the end zones at this year’s Super Bowl. Previously, the Super Bowl field showcased the words “End Racism,” but this time, fans will see a new message: “Choose Love.” This shift marks the first time since 2020 that the phrase “End Racism” will not appear on the back of a Super Bowl end zone.
According to NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy, the other end zone will continue to feature “It Takes All of Us,” a motto commonly used throughout the season. McCarthy explained that the decision to replace “End Racism” with “Choose Love” felt especially appropriate in light of multiple recent tragedies that have shaken different parts of the country. In a statement shared via email, McCarthy noted that the Super Bowl often serves as a reflection of current national events and sentiments. With its enormous viewership, the NFL has a notable opportunity to communicate timely messages that might inspire or resonate with people nationwide.
In the same statement, McCarthy highlighted several unfortunate incidents that have occurred in recent weeks, such as destructive wildfires in Southern California, a terrorist attack in New Orleans, and both a plane and helicopter crash near the nation’s capital. He also mentioned a plane crash in Philadelphia. In the league’s view, the phrase “Choose Love” speaks to the spirit of unity, empathy, and collective support that is often needed during challenging times like these.
The NFL started incorporating messages on the field back in 2020 as part of its “Inspire Change” campaign. Typically, each team is free to decide which statements or slogans to feature in its own stadium end zones throughout the season. However, because the Super Bowl is the league’s most high-profile game, the NFL office takes responsibility for selecting the message displayed on the field for the big event.
McCarthy also provided a brief review of the variety of messages teams have opted to show this year. Besides “End Racism,” other statements have included “Stop Hate,” “Vote,” and “Choose Love.” During recent championship games, the Kansas City Chiefs went with “Choose Love,” while the Philadelphia Eagles displayed “End Racism.” Now, as the Super Bowl approaches, the league hopes that highlighting “Choose Love” will inspire a sense of togetherness and compassion in viewers across the country.
