Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) has reportedly asked the Trump administration to release climate-related funding that had been frozen earlier this year, in order to support an electric vehicle project in her district. The request centers around a Mercedes-Benz plant in South Carolina’s Lowcountry region that is being converted to manufacture electric commercial vehicles a move projected to create around 800 local jobs.
In a letter sent Tuesday to Energy Secretary Chris Wright and obtained by The Washington Post, Mace urged the Department of Energy to approve nearly $300,000 in funding to assist the plant’s transition. She argued that the investment would help preserve American-made options in the commercial vehicle market, aligning with broader economic goals even as Trump continues efforts to rein in federal spending.
Mace, a vocal Trump supporter, acknowledged the administration’s push to eliminate fraud and waste across federal programs, including its decision earlier this year to halt funding for many of President Biden’s climate initiatives. Nonetheless, she made the case that this particular investment deserved an exception.
“We strongly support President Trump’s initiative to restore fiscal responsibility within the executive branch, particularly in reducing waste, fraud, and redundancies,” Mace wrote, according to the Post. “While we understand and support the necessity of such measures, we believe that federal investments should continue to prioritize projects with sustained economic growth.”
The report comes as Mace faces scrutiny for supporting the House’s recent tax and spending bill, which included steep cuts to green energy tax credits. While the Senate works through its own version of the legislation, some Republicans have raised concerns that the energy cuts may be overly aggressive and risk undermining American manufacturing and innovation in the clean energy sector.
