Elon Musk floated the idea of forming a new political party on Friday, just one day after his high-profile fallout with President Trump over the administration’s sweeping tax and spending legislation.
Using his social platform, Musk launched a poll asking users whether the country needs a new political faction that better represents the majority of Americans who don’t identify with either extreme.
Following the poll, Musk declared that the response was overwhelmingly in favor of the idea, writing, “The people have spoken. A new political party is needed in America to represent the 80% in the middle! And exactly 80% of people agree. This is fate.”
He even suggested a name for the movement: “The America Party.”
The move comes after a very public rift between Musk and Trump over the controversial fiscal package known as the “big, beautiful bill.” Musk has strongly criticized the proposal for what he says is an irresponsible $4 trillion increase to the national debt, arguing that it undoes much of the cost-cutting progress he spearheaded during his time leading the Department of Government Efficiency.
Trump, however, pushed back on Musk’s narrative, claiming the billionaire is more upset about the bill’s reduced incentives for electric vehicles than its broader fiscal implications.
