Kamala Under Investigation

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) suggested on Thursday that former Vice President Kamala Harris could be called to testify in his panel’s investigation into Joe Biden’s mental fitness and the White House’s use of autopen during Biden’s presidency.

“I think it would be helpful to hear from Kamala Harris. We haven’t decided whether we’re going to issue a subpoena, but she’s welcome to come to the committee,” Comer told reporters. He added that Harris should want to “set the record straight” if she hopes to have a future in national politics, claiming that doubts about Biden’s role in decision-making will follow her throughout her career.

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) has already floated the idea of subpoenaing Harris, and Comer previously said the chances were “very high” after she stepped back from considering a gubernatorial run. Harris has consistently defended Biden’s capacity to serve, rejecting GOP claims about his decline.

Comer’s comments came after a closed-door interview with Ian Sams, a former White House aide who defended Biden during GOP impeachment inquiries. Comer, despite past public clashes with Sams, said the session was “probably the most informative deposition” the panel has had. He noted Sams admitted to only two direct interactions with Biden while serving as a spokesman but still issued daily statements defending the president. Comer pressed that point repeatedly to reporters, saying it undermines the credibility of the White House’s public narrative.

Sams, according to Comer, insisted Biden was mentally sharp in those two exchanges, but Comer dismissed the defense, suggesting Sams had no choice but to stick to his public stance. Sams did not comment to reporters before or after the interview.

The committee has already questioned or subpoenaed several Biden aides, with some invoking the Fifth Amendment, including Anthony Bernal, Annie Tomasini, and Dr. Kevin O’Connor. Others, like Ron Klain, Ashley Williams, and Neera Tanden, appeared voluntarily and answered questions.
