Kamala The Governor

Speculation over whether former Vice President Kamala Harris will enter California’s 2028 gubernatorial race has effectively put the field on pause, as Democrats wait to see if she will make a move to succeed term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Though Harris has not confirmed any plans for her post-White House career, she remains the top contender in early polls, leaving other potential candidates hesitant to launch their campaigns.

“The race is on hold until she makes her decision,” said California Democratic strategist Steven Maviglio. “It’s been very difficult for the other candidates to raise money, get endorsements… and it’s impacted other political offices as well, creating a domino effect.”

After her loss in the 2024 presidential election, Harris faces questions about her next political step. Her deep roots in California politics, having served as San Francisco district attorney, state attorney general, and U.S. senator, make her a formidable contender. She broke barriers as the first woman, first African American, and first Asian American to hold those positions.

A former Harris aide told The Hill that she has spent decades serving the American people and is not done yet. “No matter what path she chooses, she will have an army of supporters behind her.”

In early February, Harris deflected questions about a potential gubernatorial run, stating she was focused on reconnecting with her community after leaving Washington. She made these remarks while visiting areas affected by the Palisades Fire, further signaling her continued engagement with issues in her home state.

With her decision looming, the race remains in limbo, as Democrats across California wait for Harris to reveal her next move.
