Vice President Kamala Harris is altering her campaign schedule this week to visit Georgia and North Carolina following the damage caused by Hurricane Helene.
Harris is expected to visit Georgia on Wednesday and North Carolina in the coming days, according to a White House official.
Both states, critical swing regions in the upcoming election, were severely affected by the hurricane, with many residents left without power and water for an indefinite period.
While in Georgia, Harris will assess the storm’s damage firsthand and receive an on-the-ground briefing.
She is also expected to provide remarks about the federal government’s ongoing efforts to aid Georgia and other impacted states in their recovery.
Originally, Harris was scheduled to join her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D), on a bus tour in Philadelphia on Wednesday.
Instead, Walz will continue the tour with Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) after the vice-presidential debate on Tuesday, following the initial schedule.
On Monday, Harris cut short a West Coast campaign trip and returned to Washington to visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) headquarters.
She has been in contact with North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R), and also reached out to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), according to her office.
Trump’s Response:
President Biden responded strongly to Trump’s accusations, calling them false and labeling Trump’s claims as “irresponsible.”
Former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, visited Georgia on Monday to assess the storm damage.
During his trip, Trump criticized President Biden’s response to the hurricane and claimed that Gov. Kemp had difficulty reaching Biden.
However, both Kemp and Biden confirmed that they had spoken on Sunday.
