Accusations Exchanged: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Vice President Kamala Harris have accused each other of playing “political games” over claims that DeSantis refused to take Harris’ calls regarding Hurricane Helene. DeSantis denies this.

Driving the News: NBC reported that DeSantis was “refusing” to take calls from Harris about Hurricane Helene. However, DeSantis responded during a briefing about Hurricane Milton, stating he “didn’t know that she had called” and wasn’t sure “who they called.”
Harris’ Response:
- Harris criticized the situation, saying, “people are in desperate need of support right now,” and that playing political games during a crisis is “utterly irresponsible” and “selfish.”
- She emphasized that during emergencies, the focus should be on “putting the people first” rather than engaging in political gamesmanship.
DeSantis’ Rebuttal:
- During an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity,” DeSantis called Harris “delusional” for labeling him selfish. He stated that he has been “laser focused” on coordinating resources, including working with President Biden, FEMA, and state and local agencies.
- He argued that Harris has “no role” in the response, and during her three and a half years as vice president, she has not contributed to storm response efforts.
- DeSantis claimed that he has worked well with both President Trump and President Biden during previous storms, but accused Harris of politicizing the storm because of her presidential campaign.
President Biden’s Role: President Biden has spoken with both DeSantis and Tampa Mayor Jane Castor to get updates on the recovery efforts for Hurricane Helene and preparations for Hurricane Milton. Biden offered his full support and asked them to call him directly if additional help is needed.
No Immediate Response: Representatives for Vice President Harris have not yet responded to DeSantis’ latest remarks when contacted for comment.
